This week we began creating ideas from our stimuli we collected from the Tate Modern last term.
Megan:
This piece by Song Dong made me think of the mind being halfway between its existence – the middle of a life. It made me feel sad and melancholy to think that your life could be half over yet there is so much a person wants to achieve. The message I received from this artwork, was that the water poured so far represents the memories created and the past life. The evaporation of the boiling water are some memories that were forgotten and the empty space in front represents the journeys to be explored and memories to be made.
This piece by Mark Bradford made me think of the craziness and stress that your mind can be put under. It reminded me of tonnes of thoughts collected at the same time, some placed in the memory yet some being used in real time. The artwork made me feel confused and slightly dizzy. It also made me think of how the brain is filled with random thoughts which can make you stressed and your mind wants to explode but, somehow, everything still makes sense.
I did not record the artist of this piece of artwork but it reminded me of dreams. In your dreams you create random images in your mind but they can form part of your reality and make sense. The images on the wall behind include pictures of how round objects are used in real life. To me, the round objects on the floor are what you can see in your dreams. This piece made me feel balanced, not just because the objects on the floor are evenly spaced out around the room, but also because the pictures on the wall gave sense to the piece which balanced my mind.
To start, we described each piece of artwork to a partner without showing them the photo. This allowed us them to imagine what the pieces looked like and created their own individual vision and interpretation of the piece. This helped me because it meant they could tell me what they saw and what spoke to them about what I described. These ideas could be put forward into my piece.
We then had the opportunity to stay as a solo or work in a duet. I partnered up with Robyn as we felt that both of our stimuli connected and we could create a really interesting and alternative idea for our final piece.
Robyn:
These were the pictures I took.
This piece of artwork is called Lovers 1968 by Rasheed Araeen. This is a two part movable sculpture made of painted wood. Each of the two parts is a prism built out of a series of triangles which have been rotated in different ways. They can be shown either on top of each other or next to each other. This sculpture brings together many aspects of his work during this period, especially his introduction of kinetic elements into a minimalist structure.
This piece of artwork has been cleverly built so that from whatever angle you look at it you see a different shape. This made us think of different perspectives of the mind and how people see the same thing but they always see it differently to one another.
This art work made me think of neurons in the brain and how different thoughts are connected to each other. It reminded me of when people have memories from the past that is linked to another memory and so on. This project is quite fragile as it looks like it's made of tiny wires and could easily be pushed over. I like the simplicity of the piece. It hasn't got a lot of colours and it wasn't the most interesting thing to look at in the gallery, but it did make me think of the brain and the neurons inside.
This piece of art reminded me of the amount of things someone has in their mind. The black and white squares on the corners of the art, makes me think of physically the edges of the brain. The small circles inside the squares makes me think of the things in the brain. These circles then made me think of a person's circles of attention. The circle in the center- with the smallest circumference- made me think of the most important thing on someone's mind. The largest circle- with the biggest circumference- reminded me of the least important thing on someone's mind. There are so many circles in the piece of art, which for me related to the fact that the brain can carry a lot of thoughts and emotions.
We decided to pick the art work created by Rasheed Araeen and base our piece on the different perceptions of the mind. We started to brainstorm some ideas of what we could do.
